Millions of seniors who receive Social Security retirement benefits are due to get their latest monthly check today, Wednesday April 16.

The same goes for many recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and survivor benefits.

Who is due to get their monthly Social Security check today, Wednesday, April 16?

Of the nearly 69 million recipients of retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits in the United States, many receive their money on one of three Wednesdays each month.

Their money is sent out as part of a staggered system that decides a person’s payment date by their birthday.

On Wednesday, April 16, checks are scheduled to be distributed to beneficiaries whose date of birth falls between the 11th and 20th of the month.

April 2025’s Wednesday payment schedule in full:

  • Weds., April 9: recipients born on 1st to 10th
  • Weds., April 16: recipients born on 11th to 20th
  • Weds., April 23: recipients born on 21st to 31st

What exceptions are there to the three-Wednesdays timeline?

Some long-term Social Security recipients are sent their check before the Wednesday payments begin each month.

Americans who began receiving retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits before May 1997 are normally paid on the 3rd, regardless of their birthday.

This month, therefore, these recipients were due to be issued their money on the Thursday before last.

Another exception to the three-Wednesdays schedule is anyone who benefits from Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a separate scheme aimed at low-income Americans who are over 65 or have a disability.

SSI, a means-tested program that differs from retirement, SSDI and survivor benefits as it does not depend on payment of Social Security taxes, is usually distributed on the first of each month.

This month, SSI recipients should have got their money two weeks ago.

It should also be noted that some Americans are eligible to receive both SSI and regular Social Security benefits. These beneficiaries normally get the former check on the first and the latter on the third.

How much money do Social Security beneficiaries receive each month?

Retired workers – who, as of February 2025, accounted for over 70% of the 73 million Americans on Social Security and SSI – receive around $2,000 per month on average.

To be exact, the average monthly retirement check currently stands at $1,980.86, according to figures published by the SSA.

How much money do other SSA recipients get?

Disabled workers receive $1,580.76 a month on average, per the SSA, while recipients of survivor benefits get an average of $1,547.26 per month. SSI is worth an average monthly check for $715.38.
