Severe weather late Wednesday; all hazards possible
NOVEMBER. NOW, YOUR WLKY WEATHER WITH CHIEF METEOROLOGIST JAY CARDOSI. ALL RIGHT. WHAT A WINDY DAY ACROSS THE REGION. THOSE WINDS REALLY KICKING IN MIDDAY THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. SOME OF THOSE GUSTS 40 TO 50 MILES AN HOUR. RIGHT NOW WE HAVE PARTLY SUNNY SKIES. IT’S BREEZY. IT’S WINDY AND IT IS WARM AND SOUPY. THAT WARMTH AND HUMIDITY REALLY COMING INTO THE REGION THROUGHOUT THIS DAY. 82 DEGREES AT LAST. CHECK. HUMIDITY ABOUT HALF A HUNDRED. A SOUTH WIND 22, BUT GUSTING HIGHER THAN THAT. NOW HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS. THE RADAR SCAN IS STILL CLEAR ALL ACROSS THE VIEWING AREA. YES, THIS WILL BE CHANGING AS WE ROLL DEEPER INTO THE EVENING, AS STRONG AND SEVERE STORMS ARE ANTICIPATED AS THE NIGHT WEARS ON ALREADY, THEY’RE BREAKING OUT FROM ILLINOIS THROUGH SAINT LOUIS, DOWN THROUGH MISSOURI, ARKANSAS. THESE CELLS CLOSER TO MEMPHIS, OUT AHEAD OF THE MAIN LINE, ARE MORE DISCRETE, MORE SUPERCELLULAR IN NATURE. AND MANY OF THESE ARE PRODUCING HAIL, STRONG WINDS, EVEN A THREAT FOR TORNADOES. AS A MATTER OF FACT, A LOT OF WARNINGS ALONG THAT LINE. EVERYTHING YOU SEE HERE IN THE PALE RED AREA, THOSE ARE TORNADO WATCHES. AND THEY, FOR THE MOST PART, ARE WEST OF US. THEY DO CATCH LAWRENCE COUNTY, BUT I AM ANTICIPATING ADDITIONAL WATCHES TO BE ISSUED FOR OUR REGION AS WE MOVE THROUGH THIS WEDNESDAY EVENING. OKAY, THERE’S THAT RARE HIGH RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER OFF TO THE WEST AND SOUTHWEST OF US. THAT’S WHERE THE GREATEST CONCENTRATION OF WIDESPREAD SEVERE WILL BE LOCATED, INCLUDING THOSE REALLY BIG LONG TRACK TORNADOES. THAT’S NOT TO SAY WE’RE NOT GOING TO SEE OUR FAIR SHARE OF SEVERE WEATHER. I THINK THIS IS GOING TO BE A VERY, VERY ACTIVE NIGHT OFF TO THE EAST OF THE METRO. WE HAVE AN ENHANCED RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER, A MODERATE RISK, REALLY, FOR THE METRO AND POINTS NORTH AND ALSO WEST. BOTTOM LINE IS THIS LINE OF STORMS MOVES THROUGH POCKETS OF DAMAGING WINDS. SOME LARGE HAIL AND STILL THE POSSIBILITY OF SEVERAL TORNADOES COULD SPIN UP AROUND THE REGION. LET’S REALLY TIME IT OUT FOR YOU HERE AGAIN FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS EARLY THIS EVENING. AND I THINK IT’S QUIET. THEN THAT SEVERE ALERT WILL GO INTO EFFECT BETWEEN 8:00 9:00 TONIGHT AS SOME SCATTERED STRONG STORMS TRY TO FORM IN OUR WESTERN COMMUNITIES OUT AHEAD OF THE MAIN LINE. SO WE’LL HAVE TO WATCH THESE FOR POSSIBLE SUPERCELLULAR DEVELOPMENT. THOSE ARE THE STORMS THAT CAN PRODUCE TORNADOES AND LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. THEN THE ENTIRE LINE MOVES IN FROM THE WEST AND NORTHWEST. HERE WE ARE ABOUT MIDNIGHT AND YOU CAN SEE ABOUT THE NORTHWESTERN ONE HALF OF THE VIEWING AREA GETTING HIT PRETTY HARD WITH RAIN AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS. THE SEVERE STORMS WILL BE ON THE LEADING EDGE OF THIS LARGER BAND OF RAIN, AND THOSE STORMS WILL CONTINUE TO SINK OFF TOWARDS THE SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST AS THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD WEARS ON. NOTICE WHAT’S HAPPENING HERE LATE TONIGHT? NOTICE HOW THE STORMS ARE BECOMING ORIENTED MORE WEST TO EAST VERY LATE, ESPECIALLY OFF TO THE SOUTH. THAT’S BECAUSE THAT FRONT IS GOING TO BE STALLING OUT. THIS MEANS THAT OUR SOUTHERN COMMUNITIES HAVE A CHANCE TO SEE SOME TRAINING THUNDERSTORMS, ONE AFTER ANOTHER, AND THAT COULD LEAD TO SOME FLASH FLOODING IN OUR SOUTHERN COMMUNITIES. ON TOP OF THE SEVERE WEATHER ASPECT. LATER ON TONIGHT. OKAY, AFTER WE HAVE TONIGHT SEVERE EPISODE, WE’RE NOT DONE. WE’RE EXPECTING MANY ROUNDS OF SHOWERS AND STORMS THROUGH SUNDAY, SO FLOOD WATCHES HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR MUCH OF THE LOWER OHIO VALLEY. AND THAT’S BECAUSE THAT FRONT, IT’S GOING TO STALL OUT AND OSCILLATE BACK AND FORTH ACROSS OUR REGION. EVERY TIME. A LITTLE DISTURBANCE RIDES OVER THE OHIO VALLEY, THAT WILL BRING ANOTHER ROUND OF SHOWERS AND STORMS AND SOME TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS AS WELL. AND BY THE TIME EVERYTHING IS ALL SAID AND DONE, LOOK AT THIS. STILL EXPECTING 6 TO 10IN OF RAIN. REALLY WIDESPREAD ACROSS MUCH OF THE VIEWING AREA AND JUST A LITTLE BIT LIGHTER TALLIES THE FARTHER NORTH AND SOUTH YOU GO, THAT MUCH WATER. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE AN ISSUE WITH RIVER FLOODING AND FLASH FLOODING LATER IN THE WEEK INTO THE UPCOMING WEEKEND. HERE’S YOUR FOUR DAY FORECAST. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. IMPACT WEATHER THROUGH SUNDAY. WITH THESE PERIODS OF SHOWERS AND STORMS PRODUCING LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL. AND THEN VICKIE RICK, AS WE MOVE INTO SUNDAY NIGHT AND EARLY NEXT WEEK, THE PATTERN BREAKS, WE DRY IT OUT, IT GETS COOL, IT GETS KIND OF CHILLY THERE, ESPECIALLY TUESDAY, BUT AT LEAST WE’LL BE DONE WITH THIS STORMY WEATHER. WE’LL HAVE SEVERAL DAY
