PHOENIX – For years, José Quintana gained the teeth-gritting admiration of those on the Milwaukee Brewers for his work on the mound against them. Friday night, they could finally enjoy those exploits.

The veteran left-hander threw seven shutout innings, allowing only four singles and facing just one over the minimum. There was nothing to possibly complain about in Quintana’s first time wearing a Brewers uniform.

Except, well, maybe one small thing: If only this pairing — Quintana and the Brewers — had happened years ago, some back home were surely wondering as he sliced and diced his way through the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Nevertheless, after making 22 career starts against Milwaukee, including 13 in a two-year span from 2018-19 as a member the Chicago Cubs, the Brewers’ top free-agent signing from the off-season led the club to a 7-0 victory at Chase Field.

BOX SCORE: Brewers 7, Diamondbacks 0

In the process, Quintana became just the fifth pitcher in Brewers history to throw at least seven shutout innings in his debut with the team, and the first to do so since Tomo Ohka spun a shutout on June 14, 2005 at Tampa Bay.

Quintana also became the fifth active pitcher to record a win against all 30 MLB teams, joining some premier company. Gerrit Cole, Max Scherzer, Charlie Morton and Justin Verlander are the only others to have beaten all teams.

Quintana survives shaky seventh to finish stellar outing

Even in his first start of the year against one of the better lineups in baseball, Quintana had the trust of manager Pat Murphy to face the order a third time through.

The seventh inning got off a bit of a rocky start when Geraldo Perdomo ripped a single to right and Quintana fell behind Corbin Carroll two balls to none. But the veteran paid off the trust from his skipper by getting Carroll to bounce into a fielder’s choice – with an assist to Turang, who made a snazzy ranging play to his right, Randal Grichuk to fly out to the track in right and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to sky one to center.

Quintana walked off the mound with a final line of seven shutout innings, allowing only four singles while striking out two.

Brewers tack on late

A four-run ninth through small-ball tactics put the game well out of reach.

The Brewers loaded the bases with nobody out after Joey Ortiz singled up the middle, Garrett Mitchell bunted for a hit and Vinny Capra, trying to bunt, was hit by a pitch from reliever Joe Mantiply. Brice Turang, with his third hit of the night, poked one through the drawn-in infield to plate a pair and make it a 5-0 advantage of the visitors.

That lead pushed to seven runs on a Christian Yelich RBI grounder to second base, his second of the game, and William Contreras run-producing infield hit.

Cruise control for José Quintana

Murphy pushed hard for his club to sign Quintana when the veteran lefty remained on the market as spring training began. Considering what Quintana has delivered so far in his Brewers debut, the skipper might be the happiest man on earth.

Quintana is through six shutout innings on 62 pitches, having faced the minimum and retired 10 in a row. From the jump, it was a pitching clinic from Quintana, who didn’t force many whiffs but mixed speeds and locations while keeping the ball on the ground.

Jackson Chourio sets a career-best

Jackson Chourio’s opening day oh-fer is a thing of the past now.

With a one-out single in the top of the fifth, Chourio continued his stretch of notching a hit in every game since the New York fiasco, extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games.

After a passed ball moved Chourio to second and Turang, whose hit streak was snapped at 12 games Thursday, to third. They came across to score on a Yelich RBI grounder and Contreras sac fly, respectively.

Rhys Hoskins gets on the board, then so do the Brewers

Lacking a single extra-base hit through 31 at-bats this season, Rhys Hoskins finally broke through with a grounder that tugged the third-base line and rolled into the left-field corner for a double leading off the third against Eduardo Rodriguez.

Hoskins then scored when Sal Frelick chopped a double over Arizona first baseman Josh Naylor, who was charging hard for a potential bunt.

Two innings, two double plays for José Quintana

It took all of six pitches for Quintana to get through his first frame as a member of the Brewers. The inning entailed a flyout to right, rocketed single to right by Carroll but a second-pitch double play off the bat of Grichuk to send things to the second scoreless.

The second ended the same way for Quintana and the Brewers: a 6-4-3 double play. This time, the left-hander got Eugenio Suarez to pound a sinker right at the shortstop Ortiz.
