Colorado Rockies (3-9, 5th in NL West)

The Rockies salvaged Thursday’s series finale against the Brewers, but they are still already 6½ games out in the division, have just two wins in their last 10 games and have the majors’ worst run differential (minus-28). The Rockies are coming off back-to-back 100-plus loss seasons, but Colorado won last year’s series 8-5.

San Diego Padres (10-3, 1st in NL West)

The first team to reach 10 wins, the Padres are up a half-game on both the Giants (9-3) and the Dodgers (10-4). The Padres’ plus-14 run differential is tied for sixth in the majors.

Colorado: OF Brenton Doyle tied a career-high with five RBIs on Thursday and has three homers and 11 RBIs in his last six games (1.129 OPS. Doyle and SS Ezequiel Tovar both have 10 hits over that stretch. Rookie OF Zac Veen is 2-for-12 with an RBI and two strikeouts since his call-up. The Rockies rank16th in the majors with a .684 OPS and 29th in strikeouts, while the pitching staff ranks 27th with a 4.89 ERA, including the bullpen’s dead-last 6.53 ERA.

San Diego: The Padres lead the majors with a 1.65 bullpen ERA, while the team OPS (.761) ranks ninth. 1B Luis Arraez leads the team with 11 hits over his last six games (.964 OPS), while SS Xander Bogaerts has an .865 OPS over his last six games. DH Gavin Sheets is 2-for-15 over his last six games and DH Yuli Gurriel is 1-for-12 over the same stretch.

Pitching matchups

Friday

Rockies RHP German Marquez (0-1, 2.45 ERA)   |   The 31-year-old Venezuelan walked six batters while allowing four runs—three earned—in five innings in a loss to the Athletics. He opened the season with six shutout innings in a no-decision in Philadelphia. His 10 wins in 18 games/16 starts (4.38 ERA) against the Padres are four more than any other opponent in his career, but Marquez hasn’t faced San Diego since 2023 (6 IP, 2 ER).

Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (1-1, 2.70 ERA)   |   The first-year Padre went from excellent in his debut (7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER) to poor in Chicago, where he allowed three runs on six hits and three walks in three innings in a loss. Pivetta is 0-5 with a 15.51 ERA in 15 ⅔ innings against the Rockies, but three of his five appearances were at Coors Field (18.90 ERA). Pivetta allowed eight runs in 2⅔ innings last year in Denver.

Saturday

Rockies RHP Chase Dollander (1-0, 7.20 ERA)   |   The 23-year-old won his MLB debut on Sunday with six strikeouts over innings (4 ER) against the Athletics at Coors Field. Dollander is ranked No. 24 among MLB.com’s top-100 prospects. The Rockies drafted Dollander ninth overall in 2023 out of Tennessee, which produced Hall-of-Famer Todd Helton.

Padres LHP Kyle Hart (1-0, 11.12 ERA)   |   The 32-year-old rookie won his debut (5 IP, 2 ER), but he could not get out of the first inning last weekend at Wrigley Field, as he walked four, allowed two hits and gave up five runs in two-thirds of an inning. Righties have a 1.375 OPS in 22 plate appearances, while lefties have a .400 OPS in five plate appearances.

Sunday

Rockies LHP Kyle Freeland (0-2, 3.79 ERA)   |   The 31-year-old veteran opened the season with back-to-back quality starts (2.13 ERA) before allowing five runs in 6⅓ innings on Tuesday against the Brewers. Freeland has a 4.56 ER over 129 career innings against the Padres, including allowing five runs in five innings in a loss last year at Coors Field.

Padres RHP Michael King (2-0, 4.05 ERA)   |   The Padres have won all three of his starts, although King has yet to complete six innings this season. King has a 9.82 ERA in 11 innings against the Rockies, which includes allowing 10 earned runs in nine innings last year.

Training room

Colorado: INF Thairo Estrada could be out well into May after he was hit by a pitch late in spring training, fracturing his right wrist. LHP Austin Gomber (shoulder) remains without a timetable, while RHP Jeff Criswell (Tommy John surgery) is out until next year.

San Diego: OF Jackson Merrill hit the injured list on Tuesday with a right hamstring strain. The team also lost both OF Fernando Tatis Jr. (shoulder) and 2B Jake Cronenworth (cramping) to injuries on Tuesday, but both could return to the lineup Friday. RHP Joe Musgrove (Tommy John) began throwing this week. He’s expected to miss the entire year, although he hopes to be able to pitch out of the bullpen in the playoffs.
