Cornell shocks Michigan State 4-3 in NCAA Hockey Regional Semifinal

TOLEDO, Ohio (WILX) – Michigan State hockey came into the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 overall seed but was shocked by No. 16 overall seed Cornell, losing 4-3 in the Toledo Regional Semifinal.

MSU’s Gavin O’Connell started the scoring with a first-period goal off of a defensive zone turnover by Cornell. Cornell’s Ryan Walsh evened the score before Daniel Russell put the Spartans back in front 2-1 with a power play goal in the first period’s final minute.

The score stayed 2-1 deep into the second period, but Charlie Major scored to tie it for the Big Red with under four minutes remaining. Just 17 seconds later, Karsen Dorwart scored to regain the lead for MSU and send the Spartans to the third period ahead 3-2.

Cornell tied the game again with 7:21 remaining in the third period when Ryan Walsh got a rebound in MSU’s end and put a quick shot past MSU goaltender Trey Augustine. Matt Basgall was called for a tripping penalty that put Cornell on the power play with 1:39 remaining in regulation. Cornell made good use of its first power play of the game, as Sullivan Mack netted the game-winning goal with 10 seconds remaining.

Augustine saved 17 of 21 shots by Cornell.

Cornell advances to the NCAA Toledo Regional Final, where they’ll take on Boston University after its 8-3 victory over Ohio State on Thursday afternoon.

Michigan State ends its season 26-7-4, champions of the Great Lakes Invitational, Big Ten regular season and Big Ten Conference Tournament.
