ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be held near Atlanta in 2026 after 25 seasons in Greensboro

THE MONTHS AHEAD. RIGHT NOW, AT 10:00, CONTINUING COVERAGE TONIGHT OF SOME PRETTY BIG NEWS IMPACTING GREENSBORO. THE GATE CITY WILL CONTINUE TO PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN ACC TOURNAMENTS. OFFICIALS REVEALED THE CHAMPIONSHIP HOST SIZE THROUGH 2029 OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT THREE YEARS, GREENSBORO WILL BE HOME TO GYMNASTICS, WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AND GOLF, AND THE MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT WILL ONLY BE IN GREENSBORO IN 2027 AND 2029. BOTH THE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE GREENSBORO AQUATIC CENTER IN FOUR OF THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. RALEIGH CHARLOTTE. AND CARY ARE AMONG THE OTHER CITIES NAMED AS HOST SITES. THERE WERE CERTAINLY A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT GREENSBORO’S FUTURE IN THE ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE. The tournament will take place next year at the Gas South Arena in Duluth, Georgia. The ACC said the decision was made after an extensive bid process. It will be held from March 4-8. The arena is located about 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta and has a capacity of 13,000.The tournament has been held in Greensboro for 25 of the past 26 seasons. “Women’s basketball is thriving, and we are delighted to bring the longest-running collegiate conference women’s basketball tournament to a new, state-of-the-art venue in our region, further enhancing the incredible success we have achieved with our partners in Greensboro,” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said. Before that, it was held in Charlotte from 1997-1999. It was also held previously in the Winthrop and Fayetteville areas. The 2025 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament brought in more than 70,000 fans for the first time since 2009, according to the ACC. The championship game featuring No. 11 Duke and No. 7 NC State set an attendance record with 11,823 fans. The record surpassed the previous ones set in 2005 and 2007 of 11,538.In February of 2024, the ACC announced that Charlotte would host the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament in 2027. They also announced the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament will take place in North Carolina for five consecutive years up through 2029. The Greensboro Coliseum will host the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2027 and 2029. The tournament will alternate years, taking place also at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte in 2026, and 2028.
